@patinaresearch I know people dog on the S55 because it sounds like ass without a single midpipe, has crankhub issues, and doesn’t play well once you get past the 600 hp mark but man they put it in the prettiest M3 of them all

If BMW hadn’t screwed the pooch then according to my calculations the G80 would have been a high revving ITB powered V10 M3.
Let’s look at the progression
• E30 M3 (S14B23)
2.3L high revving inline four with individual throttle bodies. A true motorsport derived engine revving to around 7,300 RPM.
• E36 M3 (S50B30 and S50B32 in Europe)
3.0L and later 3.2L high revving inline six with ITBs in the Euro models. U.S. models received the non ITB S50 and S52. Euro cars revved to roughly 7,600 to 8,000 RPM.
• E46 M3 (S54B32)
3.2L high revving inline six with ITBs. Widely regarded as one of BMW’s finest engines with an 8,000 RPM redline.
• E92 M3 (S65B40)
4.0L high revving V8 with ITBs. A race inspired engine derived from the F1 era V10 S85 architecture revving to 8,400 RPM.
• F80 M3 (S55B30)
3.0L twin turbo inline six. Efficient and fast but lacking the soul linear powerband and sound of its predecessors. No ITBs and a 7,600 RPM redline.
• G80 M3 (S58B30)
3.0L twin turbo inline six. An improved S55 with better response sound and strength but still turbocharged and without ITBs. Revs to 7,200 RPM.
If only they had continued the progression…

@Roberto_CL16 @NotFifthGear It was already popular. Yes it brought new fans, but it’s done more harm than good. Lots of “casual” fans that leave the sport after the hype has died (like nascar in the 2000s), extending the season, new tracks that suck and abandoning good ones, soaring ticket prices, etc.

@ErupticHD @NotFifthGear Verstappen has shown he can have pace in an endurance car, even if it wasn’t a top series like IMSA or WEC. Russell and Leclerc almost certainly would not be winning in sports cars. All three of them get dog walked on an oval

@NotFifthGear Also I agree that some F1 drivers stroll, Doohan, Colapinto etc. Are not F1 material and just got there from paying or sucking off but the top F1 drivers that get paid the big bucks the Max Verstappens, maybe Russell, maybe Leclerc can beat almost any other driver in all series

@NotFifthGear the f1 drivers from the top 3 teams in f1 are the best drivers in the world. the other 7 teams of drivers are somewhat replaceable by any other driver from other major catagories.

@patinaresearch Nurburgring lap times are the equivalent of just watching box scores and not the actual game. If the car is quick and fun to drive who cares about a lap time
