telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/1… Britain had mine sweepers. We were good at it. Even the US needed our expertise. We gave it up. For something unready and semi-tested. In a dangerous part of the world, we allowed a significant 'capability gap'. It's come back to haunt us. Another strategic failure. We are led by provincial fools. Another strong piece by @TomSharpe134 @Telegraph #IranWar#IranRevolution2026

March 19th 1982: HMS Hermes returns to Portsmouth after completing her ASW exercises in the North Atlantic. Many of the crew are looking forward to a good run-ashore, unaware of the developing political situation in South Georgia.

ex RFA Argus was cold-moved by 4 tugs from A&P Falmouth shipyard to be laid up in the river Fal yesterday. Argus is now moored just metres from where HMS Ajax, of Battle of the River Plate fame, was laid up after WW2. Another Falklands veteran laid up in the Fal before scrapping was liner Uganda, converted to serve as a hospital ship. Via D. Barnicoat

In UK Naval Bases sailors get to ships at sea via a PAS Boat. Named after the Port Auxiliary Service which ran the service until 50 yrs ago in 1976. The service is now provided by @SercoGroup Sailors still call them PAS boats and in @HMNBDevonport they usually bear @FOST Staff.

In the @RoyalNavy the word Safeguard is used to alert the crew to a real incident whilst they are training themselves or with @FOST Sailors use the word to ensure truth is being told. Only a fool breaks the safeguard rule. ⚓️

Explosive report in the @spectator On 27 Feb, the eve of the bombing of Iran, the National Security Adviser asked CDS, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, whether Britain should send warships to the eastern Mediterranean. ‘What about the carrier?’ he pressed, referring to HMS Prince of Wales. Knighton replied: ‘We don’t need the carrier. We have an aircraft carrier – it’s called Cyprus.’ But the failure to send a warship proved to be a disastrous political judgment that enraged Cyprus, Jordan and the UAE. ‘ As an RAF man, he is seen as too dismissive of the Royal Navy’s ability to ‘show the flag’ and reassure allies. Knighton’s performance has not been helped by Starmer’s inexperience in military matters.... #selection-1899.0-1899.90" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">archive.is/93NE8#selectio

My article in The Independent. We need armed forces designed for Global Britain as well as NATO First. That means expeditionary forces operating worldwide but ready to fight in Europe if deterrence fails. But right now we need to sort out the erosion of our existing force an avoid the embarrassment of taking over a week with heroic efforts by the Navy to get one serviceable destroyer en route to the Med. Political commitments must become delivery programmes. Now. Fast. independent.co.uk/voices/uk-arme…
