my uber driver last night makes more from his passengers than uber pays him to drive them
picked me up at 11pm in marbella
car was spotless
smelled like cleaning products
QR code taped to the headrest
"whats the QR code for"
"my detailing business. you need your car cleaned?"
"nah im good. but whats the business?"
he pulled over and showed me his phone
live booking calendar
4 appointments already scheduled for tomorrow
€150-200 per car
all from people who sat in his uber and scanned the code
the play:
he drives uber 4-5 hours a day in wealthy areas
every passenger sits in a spotless car that smells like a showroom for 15 minutes
QR code on the headrest goes to a booking page
he shows up at their house next day and details their car in the driveway
90 minutes per car
4-5 cars per day
€150-200 each
"uber is my lead gen. they sit in my work for 15 minutes. if its clean they trust me. i dont need ads or a website. the car sells itself"
last month:
- drove 140 uber rides
- 38 people scanned the QR code
- 22 booked appointments
- average job: €170
- detailing revenue: €3,740
- uber revenue: €980
makes nearly 4x more from the passengers than uber pays him to carry them
"doesnt uber have rules against this"
"probably. i dont read the terms"
"what if someone reports you"
"then i drive for bolt. same thing"
no ads
no content
no website
no marketing budget
a €6 QR code sticker from amazon and a car that smells like his portfolio
most people would hear this and spend 6 months building a brand and a website and an instagram page
marcus bought a sticker and started the same week
the best marketing in the world is 15 minutes of someone experiencing your work
he just figured out that uber gives him that for free
and pays him while it happens

“Won’t OpenAI just kill you though?”
No. And here’s why:
The world is moving away from one-size-fits-all AI and toward thousands of verticalized AI products that go deeper, faster, and more tailored to a problem space.
It’s far more lucrative for OpenAI to partner with companies like Dupe than to copy them.
After launching the iPhone, Apple tried building everything themselves for a whole year… then reality hit, and they shipped the App Store. That became their moat.
OpenAI will play the exact same game.
Their defensibility is foundational models + an insanely vibrant app ecosystem sitting on top of them. Not chasing every side quest. Not reinventing every vertical.
And definitely not competing with the products that will make their platform indispensable.

OPENAI DECLARES ‘CODE RED’ AS GOOGLE CLOSES IN OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red,” telling staff to prioritize major improvements to ChatGPT as rivals like Google and Anthropic gain ground. According to internal memos, OpenAI is pausing projects such as ads, shopping tools, health agents, and its Pulse assistant to focus on faster, more reliable, and more personalized ChatGPT performance. Teams will join daily calls, and employees are encouraged to shift temporarily to speed up the upgrades.

@vivianyuezhou Nah I think amazon etc will realize being open to agentic commerce early will be a competitive advantage long term

So impressed with how well Dupe’s v1 research mode works, a total confidence pill for shoppers to make informed (not impulsive) choices. Great work @i8ramin and team 🫡 coming to an iPhone near you, get it here apps.apple.com/us/app/dupe-co…

@faariszh we're going to do this, its already in the works

New $DUPE app coming together… scaffolding’s in, testing in full swing. “Research in detail” is shaping up to be a killer feature.
You’ll finally see why Google Images, Perplexity, or ChatGPT aren’t built for shopping. Verticalized LLMs just do more when they’re trained for one thing: helping you find the best deal.
We’re coming for top of the App Store on launch, and it will be with an app that’s going to get 10X better from there, fast.
Who wants a TestFlight?
