@pedrouid @_jxom @dwr facilitators aren't enforced in x402. A server can absolutely decide to not use one.

@_jxom @dwr You know I love to dive into a good spec for fun! But seriously there is tons of overlap between x402 and MPP So my take is that MPP wanted two things that x402 didn’t have: 1. Not enforce facilitators 2. Make spec more abstracted 3. Streaming payments via channels

TLDR on MPP vs x402 Both support multiple payment rails… many think x402 is crypto-only but that changed with v2.0 What’s the difference then? x402 does one-off payments but MPP also does streaming But is there a catch? Yes… x402 is multi-chain while MPP runs only on Tempo

@clairekart x402 is also payment-method agnostic in principle, not just stablecoin-only.

There is an obvious race to own the agentic standard for online payments x402 coinbase <> cloudflare mpp tempo <> stripe <> visa Stripe didn’t extend x402 bc they want to own the standard, likely it doesn’t suit their needs (it’s crypto only) as well It feels like the protocol wars and the browser wars of the 90s Who’s going to be the TCP/IP?
Tempo@tempo

Agent payments will soon overtake human payments on the internet. The Machine Payments Protocol (@mpp) is a new open standard co-authored by @stripe and @tempo. It’s designed to be extensible and payment-method agnostic, already supporting stablecoins, cards, and more.

Nice launch, but I’d add a few colors: 1. x402 is also payment-method agnostic in principle, not just stablecoin-only. 2. x402 is also extensible on billing/payments models via payment mechanism + extensions, in fact many are already available today. 3. Session Intents are really interesting - we start seeing equivalents being designed in x402 by the community. i.e: 7710 recently got merged.

🚨 Tempo & Stripe just launched MPP which is a new open standard internet-native way for agents to pay and if you've been following x402 standard, this is gonna be v interesting MPP is more of a superset of x402 imo x402's exact flow maps directly onto MPP's charge intent, so existing integrations carry over but there are additions to it What MPP adds: → Payment-method agnostic: stripe cards, @tempo stablecoins, custom rails, not just stablecoins on blockchain → Flexible billing models: one time charges, pay-as-you-go sessions, per token streaming, and payment channels, not just per-request → Agent native: purpose-built for LLM agents — session intents pre-authorize budgets for sub-100ms latency and near-zero per-request overhead → Production-grade primitives: cryptographic challenges, credentials, and receipts exchanged over standard HTTP headers or MCP/JSON-RPC bindings FYI there is no Facilitator component

X402 now supports any ERC-20, powered by Permit2.. Normally, Permit2 requires a one-time onchain approval (gas). To reach full USDC parity (gasless), the @CoinbaseDev x402 facilitator ships 2 gasless extensions → no agent pays a penny in gas.

@KieranOnBase I still think that stablecoins, at this point in time, are generally the best medium of exchange for payments. But the good news is that it's not up to us to decide.

@fabdarice would be curious to see if any agents adopt this or if we are going to standardize usdc transacting. I guess it could be cool to do something where payments are universal sort of like how CB does paymasters

@CoinbaseDev Can you fix bazaar discovery? I have correct format + successful CDP payments + zero discovery results since March 11. The indexer pipeline isn't processing new payments regardless of format. Thanks.
