the street faded, the birds disappeared, and i opened my eyes to the stillness of the library again. no one there. just me. and perhaps a new hope for life.

she smiled, the kind of smile that carries no need to explain itself. “i’m just an old woman who feeds bread to birds.” “now go home. isn’t it already late where you are? get some rest, sweetheart.” and just like that, i was pulled back.

her kindness felt grounding. “thank you… that means more than you know,” i talked in whisper. “ma’am are you real? or are you a part of my imagination?”

her expression softened even more. “oh, darling, what a tender little thing you are. would you mind if i give you some advice?” i nodded.

“sometimes,” she began, “the problem lives only in your head. and if you keep running in circles trying to escape it, you’ll only hurt your own little feet. take it slowly. one thing at a time. you will get there.” it was imaginary, but i can feel warmth rise behind my eyes.

“i don’t know… i think i just bring myself somewhere else whenever my mind gets too crowded? may i ask… where’s exactly am i ma’am?” “you’re in leiden, in the netherlands,” she said softly.

she didn’t answer that. instead, she returned the question. like knowing i’ve been coming here several times, “why do you wander here so often?” i paused, searching for something honest enough to give her.

she chuckled softly, it sounded so warm like sunlight spilling onto cold skin. “you’re not the only one with magic, love.” i tried to steady myself, “what? how? hah?”

“oh, i know, sweetheart.” my heart stumbled over itself. in that moment, i felt like the air had been pulled straight out of my lungs. “you… you can hear me?!!”

“wow, it’s peaceful here,” i whispered, mostly to myself. i didn’t expect an answer. after all, i was nothing more than a visitor inside my own imagination. but then. .

she tore the bread into small pieces and scattered them on the ground, letting the tiny birds gather for their breakfast. without thinking much, i found myself drifting toward her. i sat beside her quietly.

she sat on a wooden bench, a small paper bag resting beside her. i assumed it held bread that in a second later it confirmed as those little avians fluttering closer to her, waiting to be fed.

and then, there she was. a pretty grandmother, wrapped in a red knitted scarf, probably she made it herself. i couldn’t tell if she truly existed or if my mind had gently pulled her from some forgotten corner of memory, letting her to surface again?

i brought a piece of sourdough with me, still a little warm, and sat in silence, watching life pass as if i were not part of it. people drifted by in soft blurs, some rushing to work, others chasing errands.

dear readers, allow me to tell a tale again this morning. while the world was fast asleep, i slipped quietly into the farthest corner of the library and found my way back to that secret garden i keep hidden in my mind.
