Btw it’s always been a quirky thing for me that most Kerr critics & Lacob/2 Timeline critics actually both agreed that the concoction was a bad mix. Disagreed on the cause/cure but diagnosis was the same. And nearly half a decade later, we’re increasingly stuck w/ sub-.500 hoop.

Generally speaking, I’d guess the majority of discourse is: -Stans of JK -Kerr Haters -Opps of JK stans claiming GSW fandom -Lacob/FO/Two Timelines Haters Some of these groups have to critique JK to make their main point, but doubt there are many actual dedicated JK haters.

They have repeatedly had midwit strategy for a long time outside of Jerry West’s influence. Just think about how many times Joe/Bob were stopped from fumbling by another’s choice. Compare that to the times they benefited from good fortune they inherited or stumbled into.

You know…an underrated inflection point was Stan Van Gundy vs Steve Kerr (to replace Mark Jackson). Imo the general discourse forgets that SVG was Joe/Bob’s top pick. If SVG had conceded or got his GM demands, he would’ve been in. But Joe wanted to maintain his FO hierarchy.

The biggest problem is the gaslighting and telling people it was a collaborative choice. No it wasn't. Anyone who pushed back on Joe has been removed (West) or moved on. Bob was 100% burnt out trying to appease the egos of Joe and Kerr. And so he left.

Lacob/Myers were so sure that they had a high chance to draft & develop raw teenagers into championship role players, at worst, and post-Steph franchise players, at best. It’s just not how it works. The chances were always so low and thus, too risky with Steph around.

Drafting is a crapshoot for most front offices. It’s rarely the foundation of a smart plan to contend. Usually gambling/desperation/copium for losing/mid franchises. It’s their best way to convert hype into ticket sales. Most legit contenders aim to convert into useful vets.

I get how some fans were too young to see Steph’s *full* arc. Also don’t care if others jumped on later. But will never get how so many loud voices supported plans to prematurely move on from his extremely rare window. Shouldn’t be & never was Steph’s job to demand to maximize.

Remember how they would pre-schedule to rest ALL the vets in the title defense season? Just punted likely wins despite struggling? And of course this was in the midst of an openly “develop now” mindset which was already gambling away a small edge they couldn’t afford.

This offseason, GSW has gotta re-evaluate their understanding & management of injury risk/redundancy & the importance of the reg season. For years they’ve moved like they found a competitive advantage by hedging on 82 games to focus on a 16-win run. Worked in ‘22 but that’s it.

On a good team, Podz is a backup who’d only start due to injury. I think of a guy like the Spurs’ Keldon Johnson averaging 17 ppg as a 22 y.o., got extended 4 yr/$74m, averaged 22 the year after, yet still eventually became a full-time reserve by 25 y.o when it was winning time.

4 yrs/$60m is ceiling imo. Anything significantly more, gotta go to RFA. GSW probably shouldn’t commit themselves to any multi-year >$20m AAV guy at this stage of the franchise unless it’s 100% obvious. A deal needs to look valuable on the market. Overpay & it’s Poole again.
