On Memorial Day, we remember those who never made it home. France itself is hallowed ground, where more than 67,000 American service members are buried in military cemeteries from two world wars. At the Normandy American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, rows of white crosses and Stars of David honor those who fell during the D-Day invasion and the battles that followed. At the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in northeastern France, more than 14,000 Americans who fought in World War I rest in peace, representing one of the largest American military cemeteries in Europe. Across Europe, the Pacific, and beyond, American cemeteries abroad stand as solemn reminders of the price of freedom. The Luxembourg American Cemetery is the final resting place of over 5,000 U.S. service members, including General George S. Patton. In the Philippines, the Manila American Cemetery honors more than 17,000 Americans who lost their lives in the Pacific theater during World War II and contains the names of thousands more whose remains were never recovered. In Tunisia, the North Africa American Cemetery commemorates those who fought across North Africa in some of the war’s earliest campaigns. From Normandy to Luxembourg, from Manila to Tunisia, these resting places connect us to generations who answered the call and never returned. Each headstone tells a story—a young soldier who left home and never saw it again, a sailor lost at sea, an airman who gave everything in service to others. These cemeteries are sacred links between nations, carefully maintained and visited by families, veterans, students, and citizens who come to pay their respects and ensure that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. The empty seats at family tables. The letters never answered. The weddings never celebrated. The children and grandchildren never met. The dreams left unfinished. The lives given so that others could live free. We owe them more than a day of remembrance. We owe them our gratitude, forever. 🇺🇸
