The reason creatine can look like it affects kidney function is because we estimate kidney function using a calculation called eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) eGFR is calculated from your blood creatinine level. The higher your creatinine, the lower the equation estimates your kidney function to be Creatine naturally breaks down into creatinine, so when you take more creatine, your blood creatinine can go up a bit even if your kidneys are perfectly fine Because the equation only “sees” a higher creatinine, it spits out a lower eGFR, which makes it seem like your kidneys are filtering less, but in healthy people, actual kidney function is usually unchanged.
