Cybercriminal group ShinyHunters (SH) recently claimed credit for a cyber-attack that caused a service disruption affecting an online Learning Management System (LMS). Today the #FBI released a #PSA warning of potential future impacts related to the cyber-attack. SH specializes in large-scale data breaches and extortion. Educational institutions with exposed cloud-based management platforms, integrated third-party services, and access to sensitive data are at an elevated risk. SH actors’ access to compromised sensitive data could allow them to craft highly sophisticated spearphishing campaigns using real-world context to deceive victims. Following an intrusion, SH actors may send an extortion email to victims. They employ escalatory tactics—including harassment, extortion, and in some cases, swatting—to pressure victims into payment. FBI Anchorage's Special Agent Bomb Technicians (SABTs) and members of the Anchorage Bomb Squad responded to an incident that occurred Wednesday evening involving a vehicle collision into the front entrance of the Wasilla Police Department. Together with local, state, and federal partners, SABTs conducted a threat assessment on the vehicle, cleared it of any potential explosive hazards, and determined it was no longer a threat to public safety and the safety of law enforcement. CASE UPDATE from @FBINorfolk: Chesapeake man sentenced to 17 years in prison after traveling to the Philippines to have sex with a minor Through an online dating site, Dylan Joseph Knauer, 32, met a minor victim who resided in the Philippines. Knauer traveled there in April and May of 2025 and had sex with the victim, who was 14 years old. In October 2025, law enforcement learned that Knauer was scheduled to travel from Norfolk to Denver to Japan with a final destination of the Philippines. After boarding his flight from Denver to Japan, Knauer was removed from the aircraft before it departed, thanks to rapid coordination between #FBI Norfolk, @FBIDenver, and our law enforcement partners. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. CASE UPDATE from @FBILouisville: Nigerian Man Sentenced for Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering Charles Nnamdi Emesim, 53, engaged in a decade-long scheme to receive and launder the proceeds of different internet- and telephone-enabled scams, including romance scams, government imposter scams, lottery scams, investment scams, inheritance scams, and medical expense scams. At least 23 individuals located around the United States were defrauded into sending a total of more than $700,000 to Emesim by mailing cash or cashier’s checks to his addresses, sending money transfers, or otherwise wiring funds into his bank accounts. CASE UPDATE from @FBIMilwaukee: Eight Defendants Sentenced After Federal Investigation Seized More Than 175,000 Fentanyl Pills The defendants operated a large-scale drug trafficking organization responsible for distributing hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills throughout the Midwest. Several members referred to themselves as “GTR,” short for “Getting to Riches.” During the investigation, law enforcement seized more than 175,000 fentanyl pills and discovered that members of GTR spent thousands of dollars on luxury travel, expensive jewelry, luxury vehicles, designer clothing, and rap video productions. CASE UPDATE from @FBISaltLakeCity: Utah Doctor and Two Nurses Charged with Health Care Fraud After Submitting False Claims to Medicare and Receiving Millions in Payout This week, a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging a Utah podiatrist and two nurses who worked for him with fraud after they allegedly submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare for skin substitute services, many of which were medically unnecessary, and resulted in Medicare paying $29 million dollars in claims. CASE UPDATE from @FBIWFO: California Man Sentenced to 78 Months in Prison for Role in $263 Million Cryptocurrency Scam A multi-year federal investigation uncovered a social engineering enterprise that defrauded victims of more than $250 million in cryptocurrency. Members of the enterprise — based in California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, and abroad — played specialized roles that included database hacking, target identification, fraudulent phone calls, money laundering, and residential burglary. Marlon Ferro, 20, aka “GothFerrari,” broke into victims' homes to steal cryptocurrency hardware wallets. He also used fraudulent documents to open digital accounts that enabled the defendant and his co-conspirators to buy luxury goods, including an Hermès Birkin bag.
