You thought your unvaccinated daughter had a cold. It could be a week before she's diagnosed with measles. By then, the virus “has multiplied and descended upon her lungs, kidneys, tonsils, and spleen, down to the marrow of her bones.” Elizabeth Bruenig writes about how a child dies of measles: theatln.tc/651sosz2

@fe_emiliani @baym @Shijie_Zhao I mean a good solution for this would be to either increase the corporate tax rate or income tax. That way you could recoup the money back from industry. Cancelling funding seems daft.

@baym @Shijie_Zhao ... keeps more of the profit and reduces the amount given back to the government for reinvestment. A book worth reading to be honest, especially in the context of all that is happening these days.

@baym @Shijie_Zhao Mariana Mazzucato has an interesting take on this in The Entrepreneurial State. About how in the past state investment would help feed industry innovation that would then provide more funds for research, but in recent decades lobbying from industry has made it so that industry...

@rrwick Gave it a shot for cloning plasmids. Incredibly easy to set up/use (found that necat, raven, nextdenovo failed with really small plasmids). But the end results were amazing. Thank you so much for this!

New year, new assemblies! I'm excited to announce Autocycler, my new tool for consensus assembly of long-read bacterial genomes! It's the successor to Trycycler, designed to be faster and less reliant on user intervention. Check it out: github.com/rrwick/Autocyc… (1/5)

@vellamike @kirk3gaard Hate to bring this back up, but are the models correctly labeled this time before I repeat my recent mod-calling disaster?

@kirk3gaard With all-context mod bases enabled (5mC/5hmC, 6mA), basecalling is approx ~2x faster.

Had a chance to try out this software for some phased methylation visualization. Easy to use, well documented (though I would love more examples). Retweeting to recommend it. Come see the figures at #AMP2024. Will drop a tweetorial afterwards

My poster for figeno (P15) is up at #ECCB2024 and I will present it this evening! Check it out if you want to visualize @nanopore, HiC, bigwig or WGS data! If you have already used figeno, I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions for improvements. github.com/CompEpigen/fig…

Heads up, the GC and all-context models in dorado v0.8 basecaller are swapped around. Leaving this here as a note for others and for me to reference later in any future reviews or advice.

Another year, another harvest of porch peppers. Drying them into powder to keep me warm throughout the NH winter. Time to prepare the plants for another overwintering. Excited to see where #PathMatch takes me, my wife, and our plants next year!

Introducing iSCORED, a real-time, nanopore-based tool with the potential to detect brain tumours intraoperatively. With 100% concordance in CNV detection and methylation profiling, in the future this rapid method could provide actionable insights in under 2 hours. #nanoporeconf

The blood-brain barrier is the brain’s bodyguard, keeping out toxic substances. But it also denies treatments for some brain disorders. @shin1kano is exploring how extracellular vesicles can be used to deliver life-saving therapies into the brain. #FrontierScience
