@satorukun_0530 i do understand your point but also i think calling it a strawman is pushing it a bit. the original post was based on anecdotal evidence, just as your personal experience is. you having never encountered a person doesn’t mean they don’t exist. it just means you don’t know them.

@satorukun_0530 look i just think it’s a bad faith interpretation of the original tweet. from the context of it all, i personally assumed op was talking about a person they were talking to irl, that they presumably knew had no cultural or linguistic reasons to say the name in japanese.

@fearbehere No, it was about both maybe those people (...who IME may or may not even exist...?) and definitely also people whom the person who made the tweet had never met but who she assumed were anglophone monoglots like her and therefore had "no reason" to use the Japanese name.

okay but like. this clearly wasn’t about you. it’s okay for something to not be about you. this post was obviously about native english speakers who say the japanese name for no reason. btw my father is japanese and i am from latin america, born and raised.

English speakers think English is the default language. I use the Japanese name because I'm used to talking in Spanish where we usually use that

@merystudies so by that logic, it’s completely normal and regular to say the japanese name if thats the popular name in whatever community you’re saying the name in. be it in a different country or anywhere else. this is just about communication. i’m not saying you can’t speak japanese.

@merystudies the reason op called it “performative”, btw, is that if there is a translated name that’s more common and popularised wherever you are, there is no reason to call it by its japanese name. nobody said it was illegal. it’s just unnecessary and sometimes confusing.
