hi nickole here, I want to make a rewritten apology because I understand my earlier one didn’t properly address everything I said or the impact of it. I’m using this to make clearer amends and take full accountability for what I did wrong.
I’ve taken time to reflect, and I understand that my words were hurtful and inappropriate. I take full responsibility for that.
specifically, I was wrong for saying “people just want to look for excuses to hate” and referring to others as the “woke police.” that was dismissive and invalidated how people were genuinely feeling. I now understand that the word woke has a deeper historical meaning and background than how I used it, and that the term ‘woke police’ doesn’t acknowledge that history.
I was also wrong for saying that I wasn’t “allowed” to speak on something because I’m “white”. that comment was insensitive and poorly worded. I didn’t mean to mock or minimise what being white means in these conversations, but I understand that it came across that way.
I recognise that, as a white person, it’s not my place to speak over or dismiss conversations that involve poc and minority communities. I understand that I will never fully experience or understand those perspectives, and that makes what I said more harmful.
moving forward, I’m going to be more mindful about what I say, take more time before posting, and focus on listening rather than reacting in the moment.
I also want to acknowledge that I haven’t handled responding to people well while this has been going on. I understand that engaging in that way wasn’t helpful, and I should have stepped back instead of reacting.
I’m not expecting forgiveness. I want to take accountability and show that I have reflected and learned from this.
I’ll be taking some more time away, and when I come back I want to be more respectful and aware of how I engage. thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. 🤍
