Hahaha, I guess it just felt like playing Dark Souls or something like that… hard but fun. But to be fair, after installing it for the first time it got easier, and the package manager was very good. Especially for me who before that was using Slackware (which if I remember correctly didn’t have an official package manager at the time) and it also gave me some extra geek points in conversations 😅

This brings back a lot of memories! Ubuntu would send anyone a pack of 10 CDs for free anywhere in the world back then. Even though I was a Gentoo user at the time, I used to order those CDs and give them away at university and open source/programming meetups I was part of.

But for most things it requires more processing and memory, making it more tiring 😅

And then the best metaphor I could think of is that it feels like when I’m interacting with this different environment, the brain is running a VM that operates in a way that, for some tasks it can optimize much better than if I tried doing it natively.

A few days ago I was talking to some people about how it’s been to me to be living abroad for the last 14 years, building a career and a family in cultures and languages different from my own.
