Generally speaking, I think artists should release MORE songs ahead of album drops, not fewer. Unless the songs don’t work outside the context of the complete body of work, this approach increases discovery and creates multiple data points that can inform marketing decisions.

D’Angelo dropped Brown Sugar and then had writers block for years. Then came Voodoo. Went through so many personal struggles for over a decade after. Then came Black Messiah.
His life and work is a testament that the best and most beautiful creations are still possible after seasons of difficulty. Thank you for these lessons D’Angelo.
