@JohnDCook I read a book called “The end of average: how we succeed in a world that values sameness”, by Todd Rose. I cannot recommend it though, it was below average.

My wife and I tried a new restaurant recently. One dish was fantastic. The other was inedible. The latter had a weird bitter taste, as if some cleaning supplies fell into the food. On average, the food was so-so. Averages don't tell the whole story.

@JFPuget A more common scenario for me is when the user make the model infeasible by providing “wrong” input data. Then I use the output from the solver, and remove constraints until the instance is feasible. It can be a real detective work..

When debugging an optimization model (e.g. a MILP), a very effective way is to use a known feasible solution. Set variable bounds to what they are in the solution and add constraints until you get some unfeasible model.

i mean like i can enumerate the possibilities and see that the solution is real, but i can't intuit why it works out
