Some of the powerful moments we experienced in Shibuya, Tokyo, when over 100 American Family Federation youth and clergy from various Christian denominations rallied together for religious freedom. They rallied alongside the group of second generation who have been bravely speaking out about the dissolution order and their faith in the face of immense persecution. This was a rare and meaningful gathering of faith across borders. Five US Christian Bishops traveled to Japan together with American Family Federation youth. In Tokyo, the Bishops engaged in an open dialogue with Uotani Shunsuke, Secretary-General of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Japan, and attorney Nakayama Tatsuki, in front of a room filled with second-generation believers from both countries. The Bishops spoke from the perspective of universal spiritual rights, emphasizing that while a state may strip a religious body of its corporate status, it cannot touch the essence of individual faith. As Bishop John Watts said, a community of believers is not defined by a building or a legal registration, but by the people themselves. One of the Bishops also pointed to the leadership of Dr. Hak Ja Han, saying that her composure amid ongoing challenges has inspired the younger generation to hold their identity. By standing with Japanese youth, the Bishops signaled that religious freedom in Japan has moved from a domestic legal matter into a subject of international concern.
