An old man's simple, timeless wisdom on raising kids: His little boy runs up: "Daddy, a wheel came off my toy car." Dad tosses the wheel in the trash and goes back to his magazine. Boy's lip quivers. Tears start. Dad: "What's wrong?" Boy: "You throwed it away." Dad: "I'll get you baby toys where the wheels don't come off." Boy: "Maybe I can fix it." Dad hands it back. Two minutes later, the boy has it back together. Dad: "How did you do that?" Boy proudly explains: "See the hole? See the piece of iron? I put the hole on and pushed." Dad: "That's wonderful." The lesson he leaves us with: Every time you solve your child's problem for them, you produce a "blob." You rob them of the chance to grow competence, confidence, and pride in their own ability. Let them struggle. Let them fail small. Let them figure it out. That's how you raise capable humans. Pure gold from a grandfather who gets it.
