These comments prove my point: people have been manipulated by paramilitaries and the far right. A race-based pogrom is what we saw last night, and it was truly harrowing. There are no “legitimate concerns” - you’re just a racist looking for an excuse to terrorise people.
Fiachra@fiachra_mcs

To everyone gathering across Belfast; go home. You are being manipulated by paramilitaries and far-right politicians. Do not ruin your life by getting a criminal conviction. There are better ways to stand up for ‘community safety.’

No rioting for the 30 women killed in Northern Ireland since 2020. No rioting for the shooting that took place in Ardoyne in February. No rioting for the stabbing that took place in Tigersbay in March. If there is disorder tonight it is racism pure and simple.

I've seen some of the video - and I wish I hadn't SDLP leader @ClaireHanna appeals to people not to share video of north Belfast knife attack - and fears some will seek to use it to incite and divide

The violence in North Belfast was horrific, the video will create fear and shock. No good will come of sharing it or of turning on each other in this society, including for the clout of online voices who don’t know or care about us and who offer absolutely nothing for the future.

The attack in North Belfast was horrific and depraved. First thoughts are with the victim, and their family, as well as those who witnessed the incident. We will be closely engaged with the PSNI, and would ask people not to share images further.

The horrific scenes in North Belfast should not be used by English, right wing politicians to further their own ends. I don’t ever remember them commenting on any of the other hellish things that community has experienced over the years.

The images from Scarva are bleak and disturbing. Taunts at peaceful marchers, an MP surrounded by masked men in 2026. Weaponised slurry, for God’s sake. Political leaders who won’t condemn bullying and intimidation, wherever it comes from, won’t take society anywhere good.
Matthew O'Toole@MatthewOToole2

I work constructively with DUP reps who are able and personally very decent people. But the scenes from Scarva are a reminder of the unmistakable Paisleyite DNA which panders to and connives with thuggery, then plays dumb when called out. Appalling behaviour.

@SiobhanMc80 Séamas Mallon argued for ‘parallel consent’ among both communities. Claire Hanna is saying that any ambitious Nationalist shouldn’t be satisfied with just 51%, we should be selling our dream to everyone across the North. Those are 2 wholly different outlooks.

@fiachra_mcs Fiachra, I’m referring to Seamus Mallon first referencing this concept & other then referring to weighted majority. I think we need to be careful not to rewrite terms of BP. This has also been muted in the south & so that’s what I’m getting at.

Siobhan if you need me to send over the article I’m very happy to - obviously you didn’t read it because that’s an interview with Claire Hanna not Seamus Mallon! Why does Sinn Fein not want to broaden the support for a New Ireland and make it work for everyone?
Cllr Siobhan McCallin@SiobhanMc80

Mallon’s weighted majority concept is an absolute attempt to rewrite the GFA If 50% + 1 is enough to keep us shackled to Britain it is enough to break the mannacles from Britain Partition was forced under “immediate & terrible threat of war” & will end by democratic BP!

@MrRCain2 By all means if you think the mainstream political parties have failed Irish Nationalists that’s a view you are more than entitled to hold in a democracy. But surely engage with events like this in the here and now to try and bring about the change which you seek?

@fiachra_mcs Fiachra sorry no. Your party and every other Irish party on this island has had 30 years. 3 decades since the GFA and no all island plan? What's going on? I would love u all to explain it.

Am curious when will be a good time for a border poll? @fiachra_mcs if you have noticed Irish Nationalists and Republicans in this society at grass roots are getting very tired and angry with the poor political performance of the SDLP. I for one think your all out of touch✅📢📢
Fiachra@fiachra_mcs

Suggesting that Irish Nationalists aim higher than just 51% is not disregarding the Good Friday Agreement. We should be working to sell our dream of a New Ireland to every citizen in the North and South, not just hoping it squeaks over the line.

@MrRCain2 I think if I explained the detail of why rushing through constitutional change, in the same way Brexit was rushed, it would be patronising Cain.

@fiachra_mcs Really and how will it? Explain to me in detail? Your party and Sinn Fein have had 30 years. Decades to make a plan. Where is this plan? Where is the so called Irish government and their plan? What's going on?

@MrRCain2 Take at look at the SDLPs most recent announcement, we are bringing people together and driving forward the argument but it cannot be rushed otherwise we are no better than the Tories.

@fiachra_mcs Well I am not seeing any delivery for me and other Irish Nationalists from your party. U want to know what disgusts me the most. Every single Irish party. The SDLP, Sinn Fein, FF, FG, PBP and Aontu should be working together collectively on Irish Unification. The one thing which

@MrRCain2 And surely if our pitch for a New Ireland is as strong as we both believe it is there’s no harm in aiming for beyond for 51%? We don’t want to change the conditions we just want to aim higher.

@MrRCain2 I think we are laying really important grassroots groundwork in terms of our campaign for a New Ireland, but the highest-level planning has to come from the British and Irish Governments. During that time we are working to sell our vision across the North

@fiachra_mcs Fiachra it isn't good enough from the SDLP and Sinn Fein. Long time voters like myself are getting really pissed off with the lack of delivery from yourselves and Sinn Fein. Frankly the utter lack of delivery all of you should be ashamed. Nearly 30 years. 3 decades and still me

@MrRCain2 Following on from my last one, whereas if we take the time to properly plan and work out the best of both worlds in terms of the systems in the North and South we can achieve a better outcome for everyone.

@fiachra_mcs Plus 1. 51% or whatever if it's a majority then that's good enough. Your party is going to have to get it's act together and start delivering. Because I am not seeing any delivery from yourselves.
