It's not just horizontal scale, it's horizontal scale while maintaining the ability for any asset/dApp to instantly (same transaction) work with any others (Atomic Composability). That means L2s are a no-go long term. This matters if you agree that eventually ALL financial transactions, from payments through to investing and even "sophisticated" actions like options trading or arbitrage. Anything of value (even in-game assets, ID, and timesheets) will be transacted on-chain. DLTs are fantastic at securing things of value, and interoperability of any of those things together is essential. Even just thinking of traditional financial markets, arbitrage is essential for end users to have efficient markets. With atomic composability, anyone can take a flash loan to arb with effectively zero risk, as the loan is taken and paid in 1 Tx. This is why everything needs to be able to instantly work together, because maybe the arb is Fx to S&P 500.... or lumber futures, or DePin infra. They can't go on separate chains or L2s, as then you lose the efficiency of the market. All global finance (at both retail and "backend") want to allocate capital as efficiently as possible based on risk-adjusted returns. DLTs make it more efficient and lowers risk due to interoperability - not to mention new markets and asset classes. To (finally) directly answer your question - there will be more assets that exist today, more markets than those that exist today, and any/all of those assets need to be able to interact with any other "instantly". Plus, if that wasn't enough, think API on the internet. Early internet, all "transactions" were user-generated. Now, each user-initiated action triggers hundreds (thousands?) of automated API calls etc. The same thing is happening with crypto, dApp to dApp transactions will supersede user to dapp actions by orders of magnitude. And that's before AI agents etc.
