Moments ago, the Georgia State Senate unanimously passed HB 1030, expanding access to advanced math courses for middle school students. We thank @TucciSandy1 and @smcneel for their leadership on this legislation. The bill now moves to the Georgia House for final agreement.

One of my pet peeves during the school shutdown period was the style of reporting that fell back on "we don't have enough research to say definitively that this is bad." The reporter gets to feel smart but by the time the evidence rolls in the damage is done (& it's not covered)

First of all, AMEN from someone who spent the pandemic screaming “what about the precautionary principle???” along with “why won’t you look at Europe and the US Sun Belt” into the Twitter void. This isn’t the only topic, tho…

“If New York’s political and educational leaders really care about educational equality, they could … ensure that district-run schools as well as charter schools, magnet schools and gifted-and-talented programs are truly open to all” — @Dyrnwyn

Excellent piece by @Dyrnwyn- like many cities NY uses a system designed to both restrict access to seats in good schools based on income and also let the winners claim progressive bonafides. wsj.com/opinion/why-wo…

Today, we're releasing Evidence of Impact: the 2025 CANnual Report. The test of any advocacy campaign is simple: is it making life better for the people it was built to serve? That is the standard we’re holding ourselves to at 50CAN as we work to usher in a new wave of educational opportunity.

"It is time that policymakers take up this charge from their voters and make 2026 the year that tutoring becomes a permanent part of the American educational experience." @lizcohen12 argues in a new piece in @The74 today that the time to act on making tutoring truly universal is now.

.@lizcohen12: What would it take to make tutoring truly universal? The main barrier is expense, with 30% of parents whose children are not in tutoring saying that it’s too expensive. Access is another challenge. @FiftyCAN buff.ly/mlAmPf7

We need to be much tougher on grade inflation "The cumulative impact is economically significant: a teacher with one standard deviation higher average grade inflation reduces the present discounted value of lifetime earnings of their students by $213,872 per year."
Jeff Denning@JeffDenning

Today we released our new NBER working paper: "Easy A's, Less Pay: The Long-Term Effects of Grade Inflation." Joint work with Rachel Nesbit, Nolan Pope, and Merrill Warnick. Grades in U.S. high schools have risen steadily over the past several decades, but the effect is unknown
