Ken Kenobi is completely wrong here. I have no problem with us moving on and learning from the past as Koreans and Japanese. And while there are faults in all our nations’ histories, we shouldn’t constantly apologize for past sins we didn't commit. But this is just historical revisionism and lies. Imperialist Japan wasn’t going around committing genocidal conquests and raping all of Asia in the early 1900s because of some grand benevolence. To say that Japan annexed Korea so that Korea can be an independent state from China or Russia is retarded. If that's true, why did the Japanese strip Koreans of all their names, language, customs, traditions, and heritage and force cultural erasure? They aimed to replace Korean identity, language, and heritage with Japanese ones to facilitate rule and loyalty to the Emperor. Koreans were forced to worship at Shinto shrines, including venerating Japanese emperors and war heroes. Over 200,000 Korean historical documents were reportedly burned. Teaching Korean history was banned. Japanese authorities demolished or repurposed historic sites. Koreans were forced to adopt Japanese names. Speaking Korean was forbidden in public spaces, schools, and official settings. All of the economic capital and products developed in Korea were used to support Japan proper, not Koreans. Japan treated Korea primarily as a source of food, raw materials, and cheap labor to support its own economy, military needs, and industrialization. Japan prioritized boosting Korean rice production to feed its growing population and urban workforce. Most of Korea’s rice was exported back to Japan while per capita rice consumption decreased in Korea, with Koreans increasingly relying on cheaper imported millet. Most of Korea’s coal, iron ore, pig iron, gold, and other minerals were shipped to Japan. Infrastructure like railways and ports were built mainly to facilitate resource extraction and Japanese military logistics. The biggest reason for Korea's economic stagnation was its lack of natural resources (literally zero oil reserves) and strict isolationist policy that largely prohibited trade with foreign nations during the Joseon dynasty that didn’t allow it to compete with developing global powers. King Gojong, with the founding of the Korean Empire in 1897, was already industrializing and shifting Korean economic and foreign policy to be less isolationist compared to late Joseon policies, and the Korean GDP was already steadily rising before Japanese annexation. Yeah, economic growth occurred in throughout the colonial period, but it was extractive, designed to benefit the metropole Japan rather than develop an autonomous Korean economy. Korea was already on its way to industrializing into the modern age before annexation. You don’t need to constantly apologize for a past you weren’t involved in. But there’s also no need to lie about history to craft a false narrative about Imperalist Japan.

In Japan, children clean their own schools. Every day. After lunch. About twenty minutes. Classrooms. Hallways. Toilets. Not because the schools are too poor to hire someone. Because in 1947, this country decided that cleaning your own space is part of becoming a person. The cleaning rag is on the school supply list. Right next to the pencils. Egypt teaches it now. So does Indonesia. So does Mongolia. Think about the last time you watched a seven-year-old mop a floor without complaining. Japan does that in every elementary school in the country. Not as punishment. As education.
