@woodg31 Interesting that Hill Street Blues started off on ITV. Pilot episode here. I only started watching when it got to Channel 4 about 1986/87. One of the truly
great tv series.

@talktoBOI is there an issue with the phone App? Trying to log in and the screen glitches and I get ‘Your Session has timed out’
Then close app and try again and it works. Then next time screen glitches multiple times.
Very odd. Never happened before. ( iPhone user)

@talktoBOI @DoubleZCreative I am having the same issue. Constant timeouts and refreshes. happening on 3 separate android phones -- android 12, 13, 14. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled. I have cleared the cache. I have restarted the phone. There is definitely something glitchy with the app. TY

@pushkar_g_singh He resigned the Essex captaincy late 1980s because it was badly affecting his batting. Became Eng captain 89/90 and for the next 4 years was the most successful test batsman in the world. The enigma continues. V glad he ended with test avg comfortably > 40.
English

@finlaydavid You mean a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma 😎. He could play both spin and pace with ease. His FC record is comparable to the best ever. Why he couldn’t make consistent runs vs Australia would remain a puzzle.

Graham Gooch divides opinions amongst both English and non-English cricket fans.
Is he a cricketing great or someone who was merely very good?
8,900 runs at 42.6 is an adequate record, but it doesn’t signify greatness. However, Gooch was more than his numbers.
He played in a difficult era for batsmen and battled the West Indian pace attack at its best. And he came out with his reputation enhanced from those battles.
He had an indifferent start to his test career as a 22-year old. He made a pair at home vs Australia in 1975. He also failed at the next test at Lord’s.
His next chance came three years later against Pakistan at home. He didn’t set the world ablaze even then. He continued to struggle playing the odd good innings.
When Windies toured England in 1980, Gooch had scored 983 runs in 20 tests at an average of 33 with 99* as his highest score.
After failing in the first test at Nottingham that West Indies won by 2 wickets, Gooch scored in first 100 in his 22nd test at Lord’s.
In a drawn test, Gooch scored 123 and 47 against the original 4 horsemen of apocalypse. This 100 made his reputation as a phenomenal player of quick bowling. It made him a selectors favourite. It was the first of his many 💯 against the great West Indian teams.
He averaged 45 vs strong WI sides and scored 5 💯 including the epic 154* against the new 4 horsemen of death that won the England a rare victory against the WI.
However, he continued to have bad series here and there, most notably against Australia. Gooch lbw to Alderman was a running gag in the 1989 Ashes. He averaged just 33 vs the old enemy across 42 tests.
He missed out 3 years of test cricket between 1982 and 1985 because he went on a rebel tour to SA. His average didn’t touch 40 until his 79th test.
Until his epic Lord’s test vs India in 1993 where he made 456 runs, his record was 5,158 runs in 78 tests at 37.92 with 9 100s.
That test vs India changed his fortunes . From that point onwards, he made 3,742 runs at 51 with 11 💯 in 40 tests. This includes a poor form in his last 10 tests when he averaged just 21.
At his peak between his 333 vs India in 1990 and 210 vs NZ in 1994, he’s world’s best batsman. It’s a short but a high peak.
In the 1980s, a challenging decade for batsmen, he made 3,970 runs at 38.5 with 8 💯. This included 4 💯 vs the mighty WI.
In his career, Gooch averaged 46 at home and 37 away from home. He averaged 33 in Australia and 41 in West Indies.
Graham Gooch was a fine batsman who played some of the most courageous innings ever against extreme pace.
Does that make him a batting great?
In my opinion, he’s world class in patches and for 4 years at his peak. He played extreme pace as good as anyone has ever done.
However, he was too inconsistent to be classified as a true batting great.
I don’t mean it as a disrespect, and I can bet he himself would agree to it.
