Hi @meralco , there's a brownout/outage in Moonwalk Phase 2, Parañaque. Reported on your website, ref no. 24030700132. Please check ASAP, my home has several senior citizens that require electricity to sleep.

@R0N4LD_MY @markgurman @david_manning Ok, but typing without controllers has universally been ass, as reported by Mark & other journalists. If AVP's promoted for productivity, this shit needs to get worked out pronto. Or, it needs to ship with BT KBs.

After watching @david_manning video on why you shouldn’t buy the Apple Vision Pro, but you will, it got me thinking about what this device actually means for the future of computing. Every significant Apple device is about how we interact with computers. From the very first mouse, to touch screens (iPhone, iPad, etc.) with swipe, it has been about changing the paradigm of interaction. The “magic” in Vision Pro, is gesture and eye tracking. Getting rid of any type of controller or physical interface is what sets this device apart from any other on the market. The future isn’t necessarily going to be hmd’s. This is the beginning of gesture interaction. Think, Iron Man or Minority Report, future computers will be controlled by you hands, eyes, and voice.

For those interested, expect the first wave of non-curated Vision Pro reviews on Tuesday, ahead of Friday release.

@SkarredGhost @benz145 They don't need to. BSB weighs in at 155g with just pancake lenses. Their secret? Moving the damn processor off your head. I hope AVP's puck catches on, so someone takes the logical next step: move the SOC & cooling there. vr-compare.com/headset/bigscr…

One of the most interesting things to me about AVP is that it shows us that price (at least not up to $3,500) is not currently holding back headsets from being much smaller. Apple didn’t have any kind of novel and more expensive tech to make AVP smaller than Quest 3. This ‘holocake’ lens prototype from Meta, which uses holographic optics, is probably the next step on the form-factor journey for MR headsets. But R&D and manufacturing breakthroughs are still needed to make it happen. roadtovr.com/meta-vr-headse…

@iVRy_VR @IvanMihaylov18 Quest 3 (via VD) gets around this with SGSR. Upscaling =/= native rendering, but provides a higher quality image and performance for the GPU.

@IvanMihaylov18 On PC, they both have pros and cons. No clear winner. Native Quest and PS5 PSVR2 have GPU performance issues, so can't push the displays anyway.

I really wonder how well PSVR 2 would sell in comparison to other headsets if it was just a PC VR headset compatible with SteamVR.

@benz145 I feel like Apple chose different goals when designing AVP. Some design decisions were clearly not made with weight in mind, like the heavy front glass-n'-metal plate. Moving the battery to a wired puck was a great first step, but you can move the processor there too.

@SadlyItsBradley 1.89% is on par with users on OSX (1.53%) & Linux (1.91%). Game devs would reach as many customers with a VR mode for their Windows game as they would porting to Mac or Linux.

@SadlyItsBradley I think an equally big deal is the last stat: Steam users with VR headsets grew by a whopping 1.5x from last month (1.23%->1.89%).

@SmashDrumsVR @thmsvdberg @KSmarties @VermillionVR For real, this MR use case of "portal into the game world" might just be the most compelling AND developer friendly way to add an MR mode to most stationary games. Basically a fully realized guardian boundary with passthrough.

@thmsvdberg @SadlyItsBradley @VermillionVR You're literally the only dev I know besides @VRDesktop that makes full use of Super sampled overlays/time warp layers. I don't even paint, but I might consider buying the title to support you. And check out some crisp VR paintings.

I remain unconvinced that mixed reality applications are any kind of an engine for increasing headset sales. High quality pass through is great, but I just don’t see applications built around integrating rendering with your real world environment as any kind of a killer app. I consider it interesting and challenging technology looking for a justification. The power of VR is to replace your environment with something much better, not to hang a virtual screen in your real environment. In all the highly produced videos demonstrating the MR future, the environments are always stylish, clean, and spacious. That is not representative of the real world user base. There is certainly some value in the efforts, but I have always thought there was much more low hanging fruit to be grabbed first.

@ID_AA_Carmack @BodhiVR How much of the latency could be solved by optimizing the rendering pipeline with smarter programming? If the "fovea"/gazed tiles were rendered last, you could cut a lot of latency per frame and tighten the fovea region.

@Norman3D @ID_AA_Carmack @BodhiVR Very valid use case. While not a huge perf gain, it provides a major visual quality gain. FFR is basically a rendered sweetspot, and eye tracking opens it up.

@ID_AA_Carmack @BodhiVR Got it! We're using the GPU at the max allowed clock, so I can't verify that. If true, Quest Pro's eye-tracking seems pointless. 😢But I suppose it still has the advantage of keeping things clear when looking at the edges of the screen. That wouldn't be the case with FFR.

@Ian_Fisch @popcornlantern @nuwnjay @ID_AA_Carmack Great point. Apple went the wired puck route. Hope it normalizes this setup in the market, so competing HMDs offload the SOC & battery from the head. Of course, the problem becomes where to put the puck. It's gonna get toasty in your pocket.
