Don't get me wrong, it's still a great landmark in sapphic history because they chose to share their lives despite society's disapproval and Lister's mindset regarding the importance of sexual orientation (extremely rare at the time). But not legit in any official way, no.

No, it was not considered 'legit' at all. It was not sanctioned by anyone, they simply went to church and took communion together and decided to be married in that symbolic way because they could not do it in any way that was socially or legally recognized.

@firecrackerx It wasn’t legally recognised but it was conducted in a church and considered legit. Female homosexuality just wasn’t talked about back then (hence not being against the law) because the law that criminalised homosexuality was specifically about sodomy/penetration

@_glorianas @capetians I am pretty sure acts of homosexuality between women did not fall under sodomy and buggery laws in the UK during the 19th century.

@capetians this isn’t really true given lesbianism would fall under “sodomy” as something sexual deviant, even if no women were ever prosecuted for it, which i would double check

@hypervividream A little bit of a myth. They were very aware that female homosexuality existed at the time, it was simply not discussed in public. The most likely explanation on why they decided not to make it illegal was that they thought it WOULD bring the matter to public discussion.

Loath as I am to insert myself into the Br****** discourse - but Anne Lister even said as much during the show. The rub is, it wasn’t like this was some woke act of largesse - they just didn’t believe homosexuality in women existed.

Por lo visto se ha confirmado que las bolleras de Bridgerton van a ser la siguiente temporada y me he enterado porque Reddit está lleno de gente llorando al respecto.

@pheebs_18 That was not a legal marriage so not sure it's fair to call it that when takling about what was legal or sanctioned back then... but I understand using it as an example of how sapphic relationships were more prevalent back then than people think.
