The United Arab Emirates has described its decision to leave OPEC and OPEC+ as a sovereign and strategic policy move, rejecting suggestions that it was driven by political disagreements within the oil alliance.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on 28 April 2026 that it will officially leave OPEC and the wider OPEC+ alliance on 1 May 2026. This move ends nearly 60 years of membership and marks one of the most significant departures in OPEC’s history.
The UAE has invested over $150 billion to expand its oil production capacity to 5 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2027. Leaving OPEC allows them to monetize these investments without being restricted by the group’s production quotas.
The decision follows years of mounting tension with Saudi Arabia over regional conflicts—specifically in Yemen—and diverging oil policies.
Recent missile and drone strikes by Iran on Emirati energy infrastructure have reportedly strained Gulf solidarity, prompting the UAE to “prioritise its own national interests" over collective OPEC discipline.
As the third-largest producer in OPEC, the UAE's exit removes approximately 12–15% of the group’s total production capacity.

"Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Discharge your duties faithfully and well. Step by step, you get ahead, but not necessarily in fast spurts. But you build discipline by preparing for fast spurts. Slug it out one inch at a time, day by day, and at the end of the day—if you live long enough—most people get what they deserve."
— Charlie Munger.
