NEPA took light around 11:13pm. At first, nobody reacted. It was Lagos everyone already had a routine for darkness. Phones came out, some generators coughed back to life, and the compound returned to its usual night noise. But around midnight, everything changed. One by one, every generator in the compound went off at the same time. Not one failed first. All of them died together. Silence followed. Even the usual night sounds cars, music from distant streets felt far away. Then we heard the gate. It didn’t open loudly. It didn’t break. It just clicked. Like someone who knew exactly how to open it without resistance. The security man stood up first. “Who dey there?” he called. No answer. A few seconds later, the motion light outside flickered on, then died immediately. That was when someone inside whispered, “Did you see that?” A shape had moved across the far end of the compound. Not fast. Not rushing. Just steady. Like it already knew where it was going. People started coming out of their rooms, holding phones like protection. Flashlights shook in the dark, catching only pieces of walls, buckets, chairs but never the thing itself. Then a tenant shouted that her door had been unlocked. But she had locked it herself before sleeping. The security man walked toward the gate, sweating now, insisting nobody had entered. That was when the strange part happened. Every dog in the surrounding streets started barking at the same time towards our compound. Not random barking. Focused. Like they were all seeing the same thing we couldn’t. We never saw what entered that night. But by morning, one thing was certain: Someone had walked through that darkness and the compound felt different afterward, like it had been visited by something that didn’t need light to find its way.
