Just over half of the 92 clubs in top 4 divisions in England have published 2024/25 accounts. Only 4 are profitable: Liverpool, Bournemouth, Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United. Average pre-tax losses: PL £31.1m, Championship £15.1m, League One £5.0m, League Two £2.6m.

Interesting that in the Everton points deduction verdict the Premier League said “A financial penalty for a club that enjoys the support of a wealthy owner is not a sufficient penalty” and that “the requirements of deterrence, vindication of compliant clubs, and the protection of the integrity of the sport demand a sporting sanction in the form of a points deduction’. Presumably the Chelsea fine (which ultimately is just a deduction from what billion dollar Clearlake will pay to billionaire Abramovich from the £150m held back at the deal date) is then neither punishment, a deterrent or protecting the integrity of the sport? If I was an Everton or Forest fan would not be happy with this outcome.

Very strange that West Ham owners have chosen to borrow £124million from a company called Rights & Media Funding Ltd. This company does not publish audited accounts, has zero employees, spent a grand total of nine grand on assets last year and is based in the finance hub of N̷e̷w̷ ̷Y̷o̷r̷k̷,̷ ̷C̷a̷n̷a̷r̷y̷ ̷W̷h̷a̷r̷f̷,̷ ̷F̷r̷a̷n̷k̷f̷u̷r̷t̷,̷ ̷T̷o̷k̷y̷o̷ Macclesfield

Rest in peace, Tommy Wright. Tommy was right up there as one of the Toffees’ finest right-backs, although he had been an inside-forward as a youngster. A one club man. 374 EFC appearances, 11 England caps, Everton Giant. Sending our love to his family & friends.

Reform is reporting £331 million in savings across the councils it runs, but Private Eye’s Rotten Boroughs writer Saba Salman says the claims are complete guff. In Kent, the party’s flagship council, supposed tens of millions in savings include cutting councillor allowances only to reallocate the money elsewhere. Watch the full episode of Page 94, the Private Eye podcast, on YouTube.

Literally everyone saw this coming. Trump stiffed his contractors and then fell out with his architect because he refused to back Trump’s demand for a ballroom bigger than the White House. There’s almost no chance DC would grant permits for that. And those corporate donations he keeps bragging about are just pledges, not real money. Taxpayers will end up on the hook one way or another.

The Premier League PSR rules are about as fit for purpose as a chocolate teapot. Chelsea FC Holdings made a profit of £128m in 23/24 after selling the women’s team to itself. The parent company BlueCo 22 (which owns the men’s team, the women’s team and…Strasbourg) made a loss of £430m in the same period as cannot include intra group transactions in the group accounts. Richard Masters keeps a straight face and says Chelsea have not broken any rules…because the rules on these types of deals are full of loopholes. If I was Everton or Forest would be livid.

Aston Villa are the latest club to explore the possibility of selling their women’s team to help comply with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, said Villa have been looking into a sale for the past 18 months, having recorded losses of £195million over the past two years – leaving them in danger of breaching PSR. Chelsea helped to balance the books by selling their women’s team to the club’s parent company in a move which generated a profit of nearly £200m, paving the way for other Premier League clubs to consider a similar arrangement.
