Initial commitments were around $465 million over several years, with totals exceeding $1 billion in economic and military support by the 1960s–1970s (including over $420 million in military aid and $1.28 billion in broader economic programs in one accounting). The aid helped modernize Spain's military, stabilize its economy, and integrate it into the Western bloc during the Cold War. Agreements were renewed and expanded (e.g., 1963, 1970, and the 1976 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation). Spain later joined NATO in 1982, building on this foundation.

Spain violated the terms of the Agreement on Defense Cooperation, which emphasized bilateral and NATO-aligned missions, joint exercises, and "crisis response". The joint bases remain under Spanish ownership and sovereignty, “with the U.S. exercising operational control over its forces”. Spain "denied the US operational control over American aircraft and ships" in the current Iranian campaign. Therefore, America transferred 15 KC-135 Stratotanker’s and 6 Destroyers to Joint Bases in other NATO countries that honored their joint base agreements. The legal remedy is to void the Agreement on Defense Cooperation, close our bases and relocate our aircraft, ships, and associate anti-air and anti-missile defense systems out of Spain. Restrict sharing of Intel with Spain and revoke any NATO discounts on military hardware, software and parts sold to Spain while requiring payment in full before delivery. Punitive action includes ending Trade agreements and increasing tariffs. FAFO is back in style on the world stage.
