🚨 WHERE IS DIEGO GARCIA & WHAT ARE THE CHAGOS ISLANDS?
The Colonial Scandal Exploding in 2026
The Chagos Archipelago, a remote chain of 60+ coral islands in the Indian Ocean (roughly 1,600 km east of Seychelles, 500 km south of Maldives) is suddenly trending big time.
Quick explainer: In the 1960s–70s, the UK forcibly displaced around 1,500–2,000 Chagossian locals from their homes.
Families were shipped off to Mauritius and Seychelles, villages bulldozed, even pets killed, all to clear the way for the massive US-UK military base on Diego Garcia (the largest island), used for wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, drone ops, and more.
For decades the Chagossians fought back, winning big at the ICJ (2019 ruling: UK occupation illegal).
The UK signed a treaty in May 2025 transferring sovereignty to Mauritius, but Diego Garcia base stays under full US-UK control via a 99-year lease (UK pays Mauritius ~£101m/year, extendable by 40 years).
Chagossians get resettlement rights on the outer islands (not Diego Garcia), many say it’s half-justice since their main homeland remains off-limits.
Today many are connecting the dots: Trump’s aggressive NATO stance + Greenland threats + now spotlight on strategic bases like Diego Garcia = rising fears the US could push back hard on any change to the Chagos deal.
60 years of displacement finally shifting, but with Trump back in the White House, the base’s future could get very interesting.
