The image shows the current registration cost for a subnet. Back in November, the price was around 200 $TAO. Yesterday, the latest slot was taken at 700 $TAO. Demand is clearly increasing, which is a very good sign. But there’s also a flip side. The barrier to entry is rising rapidly. That’s positive for subnet quality, but it also risks limiting innovation across the ecosystem. I’ve always been a strong supporter of the 128 subnet cap, but paying $200k+ for a subnet is getting excessive. To be clear: I’m still against opening the floodgates, that would lead to dilution and extraction. But signals like this do show that the ecosystem may be ready for a next step. Two possible directions I see: 🔸 Speed up the Dutch auction process again for deregistration (it was slowed down a few months ago). This way we get faster deregs. 🔸 Link new registrations directly to deregistrations For every subnet that gets deregistered and reregistered, allow a new one to enter at the same price. For instance, 36 gets dereg and registered at the same time. After, 129 can be registered for the same price. This would gradually increase the number of subnets while keeping supply controlled, avoiding dilution while lowering entry pressure.
