@floatovertrees There's definitely this type of guy, but I feel like "it wasn't socialism" is appropriate for 100% of instances it's being used, if we don't count debates over someone's orientation and political allegiance.

hey what do you think about X? - "it's not socialism" and what about Y? - "it wasn't socialism" can you tell me what socialism might look like? - "we're not utopians" how can it be achieved? - "marxism isn't an instruction" ok why is it the right thing to do? - "and not moralism"

@Gattungswesen25 Is this an all or nothing question? OK, 'socialist' countries weren't socialist and did many indefensible things. To admit that isn't the same as to deny any positive developments in egalitarian and even socialist direction. To me, the claim is there was something worth defending

don't forget that these are big budget hollywood productions, not indie movies made for 100k. we're not just talking about 'things'. we're talking about processes: production, distribution, consumption. so yes, it's 100% valid to criticize big budget movies for what they are not.

the demand to "engage with what they are" is a demand to stop questioning what agendas are (not) being set and who is (not) setting them. basically, what you're against is democratic control over what thousands of people work on and what will occupy screens and minds of millions.

the question is, why do these statements deserve to be financed and broadcast to millions of people? why should others engage with what they are rather than ask why THESE statements by THESE artists deserve to be spread and paid attention to? can you answer it not as an investor?

This isn’t specific to OBAA/Sinners but I feel like so many approach art with expectations, a checklist, and don’t accepts these works as a personal statement and entertainment. This doesn’t put them above criticism, but so many flat out refuse to engage with what they are

it doesn't mean that it's good, obviously. but it's wrong to present or perceive this as a conscious choice made by those who are aware of all the connotations. usually, people don't know anything

it's not a good thing if an element of a politically themed artwork can be described as a rorschach test it's an attempt at provocation without saying anything, it's hiding behind complexity when you don't want to be held accountable for what you created. "up to you" is a cop-out
