UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women
When I started this work, my safety didn’t matter much. I was young, and I had this zeal, this fire inside me—a yearning for change. Growing up in Nairobi’s Majengo slum, going through sexual violence as a child was traumatizing. That experience gave me the courage to rise, find my voice, and dedicate my life to rescuing girls and advocating for justice. At 19, I was searching for something—anything—that could make sense of my pain. One day, I attended a meeting for young women and heard the word “paralegal.” I didn’t even know what it meant exactly, but something clicked inside me. I knew I wanted to be the one to help others like me—the one who fights for justice and stands up for the voiceless. Nearly 28 years later, I’m still here. The challenges have been many—long days of exhaustion, moments of fear, and even arrests while protesting. But none of that has stopped me. Running our shelter, where over 500 survivors of sexual violence have found safety, is my proudest achievement. It doesn’t matter if a girl stays one day or a year. I’ve seen girls arrive with hopelessness written all over their faces and leave with smiles and a renewed strength. That transformation is what keeps me going. I’ve always had an eagerness to learn, to show up where women’s issues are discussed, and to absorb every lesson. It’s helped me navigate the challenges we face. The fight for justice isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Every smile, every moment of hope, proves that change is possible—and that it’s in our hands. *** Florence Keya is one of the 16 Humans of the UN Trust Fund that we have chosen to highlight during the #16Days this year. Her work with Maisha Girls Safe House empowers girls and young women survivors or at risk of violence and provides them with access to comprehensive specialist services in the sub-counties of Makadara and Kamukunji in Kenya. #NoExcuse #EVAW @UN_Women @unwomenafrica @unwomenkenya @MaishaSafehouse

🌟We commend 🇰🇪Kenya's cross-ministerial pledge, which prioritizes: ✅parent and caregiver support ✅safe school environments ✅responsive support services ✅eradication of harmful norms Notably, we recognize Kenya’s commitments to adopt a comprehensive child safeguarding policy, provide trauma-informed training for 16,000 authorized officers, and update the Sexual Offenses Act to address emerging threats like technology-facilitated crimes against children.

Play not only makes learning enjoyable but also enhances understanding and retention. By integrating African traditional games, teenage girls have experienced a fun, relatable and powerful way to learn about sexual and reproductive health and rights. #SRHR #GirlsHealth
