Gaga’s mistake was overestimating her audience’s capacity to sit with her concepts and artistry, IMO. She always had a clear vision of what she was doing, but struggled to translate it for what was then a mostly teenage and inexperienced fanbase. ARTPOP’s concept would have been received very differently today than it was 13 years ago.

I think about how cerebral Gaga became during born this way/artpop and how increasingly pretentious people thought she was and mocked her for it. It's not surprising that it led her to oversimplify her approach to pop music because she was often misunderstood by fans and critics
