@jeffvandermeer @midtownreader This is awesome! Your series holds a special place in my life, as I was reading (and listening to) the trilogy while my father was ill, and it made the 5 hour round trip and long nights every weekend easier. I would get them all in hardback if could!

@dieworkwear I had to take it easy when I discovered chaat masala. Or, rather, I was told to take it easy.

indian food has the highest flavor-to-price ratio. it's like $10 for a little thing of chana masala but there's enough flavor in there to power 10 bowls of rice for the rest of the week

@joncalhoun @GoTimeFM You should give it a try for a week or so and see how it feels. For my part, I have been using IDEA recently for some work I've been doing in Java, and I didn't bother messing with the highlight settings at all. I can honestly say I didn't even see the color.

@flowchartsman @GoTimeFM I agree with the more nuanced opinion that a large portion of syntax highlights are cosmetic and don't actually do much. Not all, but definitely some. Still feels like cheating the unpopular opinion polls 🤣 On a side note - I like my fruit loops 😁

@GoTimeFM Wow, this has got to be the least popular unpopular opinion ever, right? I was lead to believe there was a prize?

@jdatap @GoTimeFM Sure thing, here you go! It's not on the marketplace yet, since I've been meaning to spend the time to get it all caught up with all of the new elements and optimize it more. There's so much you can style! github.com/flowchartsman/…

@joncalhoun @GoTimeFM Lol, I knew this wouldn't be popular, but I do believe I made the caveat that I don't have NO highlighting, I just think that the angry fruit loops that most editors want me to use don't really provide much. Or, put another way, when everything is special, nothing is.

@GoTimeFM @flowchartsman Seems a bit cheeky to say syntax highlighting sucks, then show an editor with syntax highlighting via bold/non-bold.🙃 I could probably sit here and list 10+ cases where syntax highlighting improves my editor experience in a tangible way, but I suspect there is no need.

@ESYudkowsky As far as myths go, Icarus seems appropriate, but it’s hard to make into a term, so maybe “waxwings”. It’s also a pretty bird, so that’s nice.

What should AI nothing-can-go-wrong-ers be called that's around as short and polite as "doomers", and no more impolite than that? "AI lemmings" seems less polite; "AI utopians" seems not accurate; "AI polyannists" is longer and harder to read.

@BeeBrookshire Worse, even when the man might be receptive, the labor is still on the woman to take the risk to call it out, and expend effort couching an admonition in terms that minimize ego blowback. How maddening. I try to be on guard, but I am always worried I've done this unknowingly 2/2

@BeeBrookshire Every time I start to feel hopeful that this is on its way out, I'm reminded that it's alive and well, it's just that it's completely outside of my experience. I think about this a lot, and I'm dismayed at how pernicious it must be to be so persistent. 1/2

The relentless chokehold of “actionable alerts from the product” vs “competing coverage” vs “more is not better”. It is my belief that more alerts is not better. My belief has always been: “give me an alert that gives me context and tells me what happened so I can act on it.”

@ChrisShort And don't get me started on @discord, which completely ignores focus modes and notification preferences, forcing you to do it on a server or channel basis within the app, and has stubbornly ignored the issue for years.

@ChrisShort I have a key bound to DND, but I do wish Apple made it easy to turn on focus with a shortcut and duration, or had more fine-grained control on how long they stay on. It's so frustrating that my only options are "for one hour" until this evening and "always this exact schedule"

@JoelEsler But, at least in security, the calculus is paranoid, when the perceived price of a missed alert is so high. It's tough! 2/2

@JoelEsler Yes, but selling the "no, but seriously, our LESS is better than their MORE" line isn't likely to maintain market share, no matter how right it is, meaning you kind of have to maintain the firehose, even as a fallback. 100% agree that ergonomics and context are important. 1/2
