So the Fyang–Pops issue has been brought up again.
Is it honestly such a big issue that Fyang didn’t recognize Pops?
Let’s step back and really think about it. I’m a millennial, and even I understand how easy it is for someone from a younger generation not to know Pops. She hasn’t been consistently active in the entertainment industry for a long time. She left ASAP in 2003 that’s over 20 years ago. Fyang wasn’t even born then. How can we expect someone from Gen Z, or even Gen Alpha, to be familiar with every artist from a time when they literally weren’t alive yet?
Since Pops left ASAP, the entertainment scene has evolved so much. New artists, new styles, new platforms. The spotlight shifts fast. Yes, Pops was once a big name no one’s denying that , but fame doesn’t freeze in time. Unless someone stays active or remains culturally relevant through the years, newer generations naturally won’t know them. That’s not disrespect , that’s just how time works.
She’s made some guest appearances here and there, sure. But she’s not a regular on any major show. In fact, she even appeared more on the rival network at times. She hasn’t reclaimed that peak level of mainstream recognition, and that’s okay. But it also means she won't be immediately recognized by everyone, especially younger artists.
People need to stop acting like this is some kind of moral failing. Fyang didn’t curse at her, mock her, or downplay her legacy. She just didn’t recognize her face or name right away. That’s not disrespectful it’s just reality. Unless Pops is a historical icon, a national hero, or someone who’s stayed in the cultural limelight nonstop there’s no reason to expect everyone to automatically know her.
And let’s be honest what do people want? That when Fyang was a child watching ASAP reruns or old clips, her mom should’ve sat her down and said, “Anak, kilalanin mo ‘tong si Pops Fernandez ha — wala na siya sa show pero importante siya noong araw”? That’s not how normal families work. Especially when the person in question hasn’t had a consistent presence in the industry for the last two decades.
Compare her to Zsa Zsa Padilla who has remained active, continued performing, taking on roles, staying relevant. Zsa Zsa never really left, so of course her name still rings a bell across generations. That’s the difference visibility makes.
But instead of acknowledging that truth, people are twisting the narrative like Fyang committed some sort of crime, as if not recognizing Pops is equivalent to blasphemy. It's not. Fame is not sacred. And it’s definitely not eternal. Artists fade in and out of public consciousness all the time — even the legendary ones.
So instead of overreacting and weaponizing “respect” to shame a younger artist, maybe the focus should be on understanding. Not knowing someone doesn’t mean you disrespected them. And no one broke a law or a commandment by not recognizing a celebrity from two decades ago.
Let’s stop pretending this is about “values.” This is about clout, ego, and holding young people to impossible standards.
