When I was a kid I lived in Manhattan Beach, CA, and rented movies from the Video Archives Store. It was managed by Quentin Tarantino and his best friend Roger Avary, who would go on to co-write and win Academy Awards for Pulp Fiction. These guys were certified film maniacs. Hundreds of movies on the shelf featured their hand-written commentaries, and God help you if (after they got to know you) you rented something they deemed beneath your film appreciation level. I learned more about film from them than from any paid critic or author. So, yes, I cast my vote for rental stores to return and be staffed by people who love cinema and who will gladly guide you along your own film journey.

are there other pieces of media with as wide a gap between its assumed vibe and its actual vibe as “Saturday Night Fever”?

are you guys strict about your five stars on letterboxd?

Re-designing the CRITERION shelf to maximize it, space is getting limited.

Ex-Blockbuster employee here. And I mean it with 100% sincerity that the world would be a better place if we shut down all streaming services, re-opened Blockbusters and video stores worldwide, and shoved people back out into the world to find and enjoy their entertainment.

I hope this serves as a lesson for A24. They invested millions in chalamet campaign, only for him to lose everything now. With Rose Byrne, they had the best performance from an lead actress in years and could have won everything with her…. But they didn’t even campaign for her
