We are looking forward to hearing from researcher Matthew Greenblatt, MD, PhD, at the 2026 AAP/ASCI/APSA Joint Meeting on April 18. Dr. Greenblatt’s talk, “A new stem cell basis for skeletal pathology,” will highlight the pioneering work that helped earn him the 2025 Paul-Gallin Trailblazer Prize for Physician-Scientists. The FNIH is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Trailblazer Prize, which offers a $100,000 honorarium. Nominate an outstanding researcher now at FNIH.org/trailblazer.

The FNIH Biomarkers Consortium’s Treatments Against RA and Effect on FDG PET-CT (TARGET Biomarker Study) project sought to evaluate the connection between rheumatoid arthritis therapies and cardiovascular disease risk. As the project comes to a close, Principal Investigators Drs. Dan Solomon and Joan Bathon reflect on how the project’s accomplishments have improved researchers’ ability to predict increases in CVD risk, and how that may lead to new treatments for both RA and CVD. A recent thematic issue of the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science highlights insights from the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) program. Launched at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, ACTIV brought together experts from the NIH, the FNIH, and over 30 organizations to fast-track the development of treatments and other therapeutics for COVID-19. Over nearly five years, the program launched 11 master protocols, evaluating 37 therapeutic agents across diverse patient settings. The collection of articles, written and edited by several key members of the ACTIV team, underscores key strategies for addressing public health emergencies, including: 🤝 fostering strong public-private partnerships, 📢 engaging communities to ensure diverse trial participation, and 🏥 designing flexible, adaptive clinical trials. By sharing these lessons, we aim to equip future healthcare leaders and researchers with the tools to respond effectively to emerging global health challenges.
