What happens when Indigenous knowledge and Western science come together on the land? Indigenous fire practitioner Michela Carrière is working with partners from Queen's University to study cultural burnings and the particularities of smoke. This study is part of the We Are Fire project, an initiative aimed at advancing Indigenous-led fire stewardship in the region. Learn more about the project: wearefire.ca

Indigenous communities face some of the highest wildfire impacts—yet Indigenous fire experts have often been excluded from key decision-making spaces. That’s changing. A new collaboration with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre moves Indigenous leadership closer to the center of wildfire operations. 🔥⬇️ ilinationhood.ca/blog/path-for-…

Winter is a good time to burn brush or debris, but it’s still important to keep safe burning practices top of mind. Burn your debris in stages so that you can adapt to changing weather conditions and reduce smoke. Follow our guidelines: alberta.ca/safe-burning

Wildfires can still start in the winter. We’re reminding Albertans to wait until there is at least 15 cm of snow cover before taking on a burn project. Learn more about winter burning: alberta.ca/safe-burning

Big news: today @environmentca announced more than $19m in funds for Indigenous-led climate and nature initiatives—including $4.5m for Guardians! Glad to see this kind of investment, and more recognition of the leadership that First Nations are showing in stewarding lands & waters.

David Flood reminds us that stewardship begins with responsibility — responsibilities gifted through natural law and carried across generations. This is the foundation of #Indigenous-led #conservation and a path toward more sustainable choices for the land, our communities & our common futures.

Cultural burning isn’t one-size-fits-all. As Dr. Amy Cardinal Christianson explains, Indigenous Nations all have unique knowledge & needs that help guide how & why fire is used—from restoring moose habitat to supporting salmon runs to improving the health of our landscapes.

This hunting season, make sure your campfire doesn't lead to a wildfire. Vegetation is extremely flammable in the fall, and even a small fire can become a wildfire if it isn't extinguished properly. Always take the time to soak your fire, stir the ashes and soak them again.

Today we honour survivors & we carry the spirits of those that never came home. We also celebrate reclamation—of culture, ceremony, language, & connection with the land. This is at the heart of healing & is building a better future for everyone. #truthandreconciliationday

Wildfire danger goes up in hot, dry conditions. Fire advisories are now in effect in several areas of the province. Safe campfires are still allowed, but please use caution as wildfires can start and spread easily. Visit albertafirebans.ca to view a map of the advisories.
