@CheeseMacro @sdgrumbine @RealProgressUS It's easy to follow the facts when they confirm what you already believe. It's hard when they force you to abandon comfortable illusions. Steve is making that journey publicly and honestly. For all his public bluster, this shows true humility. Respect

@sdgrumbine If we question "democracy" from a scientific historical perspective we'll make new discoveries

Democracy is a veneer to cover the whims and evil of capitalism and oligarchy. Never fucking forget it. Give the Side eye to ANYONE who skips this truth.

What Ibrahim Traoré has said about not believing in “democracy” will shock the liberals, but only because they treat the word as sacred rather than material. From a historic class perspective he’s not rejecting people having power, he’s rejecting the lie that the West already provides it. What passes for “democracy” in countries like United Kingdom or United States is nothing more than managed consent. Political parties share policies and rotate in and out, but the ownership of industry, media, land and finance stays in the hands of the ruling class. Workers are invited to tick a box, but never any real say in governance. That is not democracy in any meaningful sense; it’s class dictatorship. Traoré cuts through that illusion. In a country like Burkina Faso, long suffocated by imperialism, plundered resources, and foreign interference, “democracy” has historically meant compliant governments serving imperialism. Rejecting that model is not authoritarianism that the western media portrays it as; it’s a recognition that a revolution must serve the liberation of the people, not mimic dangerous Western institutions. "In capitalist society, providing it develops under the most favourable conditions, we have a more or less complete democracy in the democratic republic. But this democracy is always hemmed in by the narrow limits set by capitalist exploitation, and consequently always remains, in effect, a democracy for the minority, only for the propertied classes, only for the rich. Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in the ancient Greek republics: freedom for the slave-owners." - Lenin, State and Revolution. Lenin is clear on this: the state is not neutral. There is no abstract “democracy” floating above class interests. There is only rule by one class or another. The question is simple — who holds power, and in whose interests is it exercised? The West lectures the world about democracy while crushing any system that threatens capitalist dominance. Traoré is exposing that contradiction. Real democracy isn’t a ballot paper under capitalism, it’s the working class holding power, controlling production, and shaping society in its own interests. @ProudSocialist I almost always agree w/ you. But the US isn't spending $$ on war *instead* of tuition. Denying universal basic services is a feature of finance capitalism. By withholding public money, we're forced to rely on private credit. The US govt can afford anything available in US$

While Iran is targeting US F-15 fighters jets that invade its airspace… The US is targeting civilians & bombed Beheshti University today, a public college with free tuition. We don’t have free college in the US because that money is instead being used to bomb colleges in Iran.

If bourgeois democracy were truly democratic, it would extend to the economy. We bicker over ballots and analyze a politician's every utterance. Meanwhile the economy is treated as a separate beast, untouchable and ungovernable. Yet it literally holds power over life and death.

They called Hồ Chí Minh a tyrant. A man who spent decades in exile, in prison, living in poverty, organizing resistance to colonial occupation. Who wrote poetry. Who quoted the American Declaration of Independence in Vietnam’s own declaration of independence, word for word, because he believed those words meant something. He believed America, of all countries, would understand what it meant to fight a colonial power for the right to self-governance. America sent bombers. Think about the layers of that humiliation. A Vietnamese revolutionary quoted Jefferson and Madison to appeal to American values. And the American response was napalm. Because it was never about freedom. It was never about democracy. It was about control. It was about which countries get to be self-determining and which countries exist to serve someone else's interests. It was about making sure that when Washington said "jump," the government in Hanoi would ask "how high." Hồ Chí Minh was not willing to ask that question. So they tried to destroy him. They destroyed nothing. He died in 1969, before the war ended. And the country he gave his life for won anyway. His face is still on the currency. Theirs is not.
