Cragfont, or as it was sometimes affectionately referred to as "the Font", was once the finest mansion on the Tennessee frontier.

The answer to last week's Where is it Wednesday is Delphy's Loft! Winchester’s probate lists Delphy as a 21-year-old woman. The Winchesters enslaved her as a cook. The kitchen was her work and living space. The loft, a 3 ft tall space above the kitchen, was her sleeping area.

Today’s #FF examines Cragfont’s exterior. Cragfont is a mix of Federal & Georgian architecture. The front door, for instance, is surrounded by a change in the stone pattern. What surrounds the door is a delicate molding and transom. The transom has 8 panes that let in light!

The answer to last week's What is it Wednesday is....a housewife! A housewife was the common name for portable sewing kits like this one. The coolest thing about these pieces is that they appear in many shapes and patterns.

The answer to last week's What is it Wednesday is a salt trough! At Cragfont, seasonal hog killing and the smokehouse's day-to-day operations were managed by the expertise of enslaved workers. Fleming, an enslaved man at Cragfont, operated the smokehouse in the 1850s.

This service record names soldiers of the Maryland Line. James Winchester appears here ranked as a Lieutenant alongside Nicholas Gassaway. From 1780-81, the Maryland Line fought in SC, and Winchester likely fought alongside Galloway at the battles of Camden and Cowpen. #RevWar

The answer to last week's What is it Wednesday is...a ladies' cap! Caps, commonly mistaken for bonnets, were popular headwear for women of all social classes from the 18th century into the mid-19th century.
