1/ Equality is not only a principle. It’s also a legal design. Pay systems. Citizenship rules. Family law. Care policies.

2/ The person carrying most childcare or eldercare is more likely to work reduced hours, have career gaps, and accumulate smaller pensions. If care remains a private burden rather than a policy responsibility, legal equality is incomplete.

1/ Equality laws open the labour market. But unpaid care determines who is capable of staying in it ❗

2/ Judges are allowed to reduce sentences based on circumstances. That isn’t unusual. The question is when, how, and for whom that discretion is used. If equality before the law is guaranteed, why doesn’t neutrality in text consistently translate into neutrality in practice?

1/ “Momentary rage.” “Emotional disturbance.” “Family responsibility.” These explanations sometimes appear when men kill their wives. They do not always appear when women kill their husbands.
