Our first president, George Washington, strongly opposed political parties in general, warning that they fostered division, revenge, and self-interest over national unity.
In his 1796 Farewell Address, he described parties as “potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government.”
He acknowledged that parties might occasionally serve popular ends but argued that they ultimately weakened administration and invited foreign influence.
