The Wrong Kind of Weed Yes, Albuquerque is in the upper Chihuahuan Desert, but during the “Monsoon” season, like now, we get plenty of rain. As of today, our year-to-date rainfall is 4.41 inches and the usual rainfall is 3.87. So the weeds in the non-cultivated part of our backyard are lovin’ it. The Russian thistle (tumbleweed) next to Mary Jane is already six feet tall. That’s just a seedling compared to the largest tumbleweed on record—38 feet in diameter! I’m cutting these babies down tomorrow, before they go to seed.
