Ok, I’ve resorted to buying a freaking blue check even though I hate what this site has become and its ownership. But I’m a chatty bitch and I have stuff to say that won’t fit into 280 characters.
I’m just so sad and annoyed that things are where they are with this fandom. This is a QUEER show, from a book written by a queer author about queer characters. A book/series that’s about celebrating queer love, regardless of status, AGE, obstacles, etc.
It SHOULD have the most accepting following ever, with homophobes not even interested in watching. Yet, somehow, it’s become some kind of haven for a homophobic, violent, insidious fanbase that just defies logic.
Like, how did we get here?
These men are not puppets. They aren’t their characters. In fact, they’re pretty much the exact opposite of their characters IRL, which means… hey, excellent acting! It does NOT mean “They must do this exact same thing I liked in the show in real life or I’ll make their life a living hell.”
Now, really put yourself out there and try to embrace the mindset that C&F are truly a thing. Close your eyes. Pretend you have a working imagination. Think outside the box and just CONSIDER it.
Now, imagine you just finished filming a show celebrating queer love and you found yourself falling for a coworker. You think “hey, we have this following of people who love the show, I bet they’d be happy for us!” So you start being seen together, you go to events, and slowly pick up confidence and happiness, and start attending more.
But, instead of love and joy, you receive hate and violence. One of you is accused of the most harmful, awful, untrue things, even though you've never been problematic in 20 years of a career. Your partner is babied and treated like he’s a toddler instead of a 26 year old man who has probably already dealt with more hate than his “protectors” have ever even imagined. Those of you not from the US- Being gay (or perceived gay) in West Fucking Texas is not an easy, fun time in life.
Can you imagine how confusing and sad that must have been for them? They thought they’d be, at the very least, accepted by their fandom. The fandom of a QUEER LOVE show. Yes, I know I’ve said that before, but it bears repeating. Some of you need to HEAR it. Some of you need to REALLY TAKE IT IN, and back the fuck off (or GTFOH, as one of these men have already told you).
The fans of this show who are queer (myself included) were excited about this being on television. HBO, even! This was supposed to maybe change things for the better for us. Now, it’s just made our community a laughing stock with the GP because there are FANS out there who are actively wishing death on one of the only openly queer actors for maybe, just possibly, falling in love with another actor he spent months working with.
Just because he wasn’t the actor those fans wanted the other one to fall in love with.
Now, let’s assume that H isn’t straight. Let’s assume he’s Bi. Sure, whatever. The fact remains that he’s already in a long-term relationship with a woman who he just actively claimed on live television this past weekend. He is never going to end up with the man you want him to. They are friends, best friends even, but they aren’t, weren't, and will never be lovers.
This fandom is now not only trying to eradicate an innocent queer man for simply loving another man, but they’re also trying to erase a whole-ass woman who has existed for at least 5 years in the other man’s life. So, not only is this fandom homophobic and violent, it’s also misogynistic as fuck.
If you can’t accept queer love, heteronormative love, REAL LIFE LOVE, then GTFOH. Seriously. Grow up, think about why you’re acting like this, and maybe see a therapist, FFS.
This is getting ridiculous.
