A short story about a small empire: Yugoslavia was a project of the Serbian elite. In its foundations was always the discourse of the sacrifice of the Serbian people. So when the leader of the Croatian federalist opposition asked once in the parliament how much this Serbian blood cost so that the bill could finally be squared, a Serbian nationalist shot him. That was the end of the first Yugoslav empire. The same kind of discourse can be heard in the halls of the American empire; the shots are fired on Twitter.
On this day in 1941, the so-called Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, NDH (Independent State of Croatia), was declared by the Ustaše. The NDH received a significant territorial expansion by annexing most of western Yugoslavia, including Bosnia, parts of Serbia and Montenegro.
Some Chetnik units under Capt. Mihailo Čačić killed Allied pilots (including Americans and British) who were searching for Partisans, disposing of bodies in Mijajlova Jama near Despotovac—where over 1,000 victims were reportedly thrown.
