@DougieCritchley actually, comparing zaïre-emery to lewis-skelly, or mayulu to nwaneri (academy graduates, similar age/career stages, similar profiles...) makes an interesting case study if we want to discuss squad depth and rotation

I see the debate about PSG and freshness rumbles on... As I said originally, tiredness from Premier League players who play in a very physically demanding league, with greater depth of competition (due to a massive financial advantage), in 4 competitions... is a factor against the rest of Europe. But to put it down as the CRUCIAL factor, in my opinion overlooks the fact that the quality of Bayern and PSG players, is just higher. And on the freshness point... PSG played 65 games last season (compared to 58 for Arsenal). The gap between the Club World Cup final and the start of Ligue 1 was 35 days. They have played 50 games this season and you can tell... Games missed with injury all competitions (+Ligue 1 games on bench) Fabian Ruiz: 25 (0) Ousmane Dembele: 19 (1) Doue: 18 (1) Hakimi: 17 (1) Joao Neves: 13 (2) That's 5 pretty crucial players, having injury-ridden campaigns. They aren't being rested, they aren't on a 9 month holiday domestically, they aren't available for selection. For Premier League fans to complain about freshness given the MASSIVE financial advantage they have over the rest of Europe doesn't sit right with me. Especially given the lack of minutes Arteta (and you can use examples for many Premier League managers) has given to Lewis-Skelly, Norgaard, Nwaneri, amongst others, this season! Luis Enrique should be applauded for utilising his squad to set-up their spring assault, PEAKING at the right time of the season, April and May!

@ingu100 @billycarpy "odegaard completed only 6 full-90s in the league this season!", "madueke completed zero full-90s in the league this season!"... you understand how it diminishes their actual playing time and how pointless the metric is?

@ingu100 @billycarpy 41% is actually... quite average? or just normal rotation? or something else? league games only this season: - arsenal, 24 players, avg league minutes per player: 45.8% - paris, 25 players, avg league minutes per player: 44%

One of my feelings is that top coaches have hacked the ideal role for FBs as the all-action, perpetually free man. But the physical demands are unsustainable, so you need a superhuman athlete to defy gravity, or PSG's luxury of playing them ~20x a year in league, or triples.

@ingu100 @billycarpy my problem is that 8.8 full 90s per season just doesn't pass the eye test. i'm watching psg (not just on fbref, but actual matches) and i'm confident he's an actual starter, and 99 league appearances in 5 seasons pretty much confirm that

@billycarpy hard disagree on "just" swapping 90s, full 90s and completed. if he plays 80 minutes and gets subbed for the last 10, he still played 80 minutes. counting "completed only" means that you entierly discard the 80 minutes he actually played

@fre — 'league' = your screenshot is all comps, which is part of the undertone: can be kept fresher elsewhere — '*full*-90s' = meaning, started + completed. that is sometimes used interchangeably Result is no 20-start or 15-games-completed league seasons, ~41% league mins, etc

@billycarpy where did you get these numbers? besides that, your 5-season average includes a 8-months injury (mid 2023 to early 2024)

I know all the context, but it's still wild to see it typed out: Nuno Mendes averages 8.8 league full-90s a season for PSG. Across 5 seasons at PSG, he has finished fewer total games than Ben White did in one year for Leeds

@DataMB_ genuine question on the physicality metric: am i right to assume it's mostly a "defensive view of physicality" (as opposed to "overall physicality", which would be equally offensive and defensive)? your site defines it as "Defensive duels won %, Aerial duels won %"

The UEFA Champions League round of 16 kicks off this week, with the eight first-leg matches taking place over Tuesday and Wednesday, before the teams meet again in the second leg next week. The Opta supercomputer has been hard at work, assigning win probabilities to every match as it simulates the remainder of the Champions League season 10,000 times.
