For years, there has been a dominant narrative about college: Earning a degree is the surest pathway to the American dream. Lately, though, thanks to AI and economic shifts, that story line has begun to unravel. chronicle.com/article/why-th…

George Washington Carver pioneered agriculture with concepts of crop rotations. He taught farmers to plant nitrogen-fixing crops such as peanuts and soybeans. However, he was making history years before when he became the first Black student at Iowa State University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. After, he became the first Black faculty member. His contributions to agriculture planted him on the #Forbes250 list honoring historic innovators: forbes.com/sites/alexknap… Photo: Heritage Images via Getty Images

Did you know Harriet Tubman lived with a lifelong traumatic brain injury that caused sudden sleep attacks and blackouts? As a teenager enslaved in Maryland, Tubman was struck in the head by a heavy metal weight thrown by an overseer. The blow fractured her skull and nearly killed her. She was left without proper medical care, and the injury affected her for the rest of her life. Afterward, Tubman began experiencing sudden sleep attacks, dizziness, severe headaches, and episodes historians believe were seizures caused by that head trauma. At times she would lose consciousness without warning. Despite this, Tubman went on to become one of the most daring freedom fighters in American history. She escaped slavery herself, then returned repeatedly to the South to guide other enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad. She later served as a Civil War scout, nurse, and spy, helping plan military operations that freed hundreds more. Tubman’s injury did not stop her from traveling long distances, navigating hostile territory, or risking capture again and again. Instead, she carried those physical challenges with her while continuing her work.

In 1952, Sarah Keys, a Black Army private who had honorably served her country, was arrested and forcibly removed from a bus for refusing to give up her seat. She could have stayed silent. Instead, she fought back in court and helped secure a landmark ruling that outlawed segregation in interstate bus travel. We honor Sarah Keys and the brave Black women whose courage helped bend the law toward justice. #BlackHistoryMonth
