@JacquiOatley @England Who we think should be in a team is subjective. We can argue player x is better than y and someone else can say y is better than x. Both can be right. So many factors come into winning - player selection is key, but there’s culture, togetherness, luck, tactics and so much more

Having read Gareth Southgate’s leadership book recently, I have a different reaction to this @England 🏴 squad announcement to others.
So many factors apply to these decisions that we’ll never know about. The manager has to face media questions that he can’t alway honestly answer, knowing full well he’ll be vilified.
E.g in GS’s book, he wrote about two players who’d declined a call up for friendlies. We had no idea and he’d have been slated him for not selecting them.
All opinions are valid, but remember Tuchel has to pick players based on a variety of factors, not just whether “he’s a better player than him”.

Petr Vlachovsky secretly filmed female players in changing rooms and showers.
Today, the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary investigation decided to ban Petr Vlachovsky from exercising any football-related activity for life.

@barneyronay Tests plural. Financial charges: not mentioned in BBC and other coverage. The guy is a genius as I’ve stated multiple times. Has changed football at all levels in so many ways. But let’s balance his legacy?

People often ask me if sexism in football is still a problem. And if I want to write a second book. I think it's pretty clear what the answer is. It's never ending. Even in 2026.

Florentino Pérez almost never speaks. After hearing how he referred to my fellow female journalists, maybe it’s for the best. From Rubiales “false feminism” to Pérez’s “I don’t even know if she knows anything about football.” These are my gut feelings. nytimes.com/athletic/72785…

@TomJGarry And if you’ve ever wondered why I wrote a book about sexism in football ⬆️.
It’s 2026, but so often feels like 1926.

@imartinr11 It’s why I wrote a book about this exact topic
English

Q. And why did you write a book about sexism in football, Sally?

@Lord_LMC @TomJGarry It’s a balancing act … finding that price point… too low offers a risk that people don’t care if they go / not go and too expensive means some people don’t buy at all. 11,000 no shows is high…. Could suggest the ticket prices were v low or freebies.
English

@FreedmanSal @TomJGarry The tickets are relatively cheap so if people decide not to attend after buying them, it's not much of a financial loss. If they'd paid £100s, they'd make more of an effort to still attend
60k+ attendees is still a very decent turn out

Just a small side note from last night's game, compared to the big talking points, of course, but it's worth noting the uplift in the crowd for the same fixture...
Feb 2025, England-Spain at Wembley: 46,550
April 2026, England-Spain at Wembley: 62,306
Decent growth.

It was a pleasure to deliver a workshop about sexism in football at the @FairGameUK conference at the @FootballMuseum in Manchester.
Thank you Niall Couper and Sarah Porter, MBA for the opportunity.
