Things are heating up at the top of the world. The Arctic is warming much faster than the rest of the planet and the ice that once kept much of the region closed off is thinning. Countries are now looking north. In the latest Weekend Read, Alex Pugh outlines how new shipping routes and resource projects may bring infrastructure and strategic interest. But the Arctic is home to people, towns, borders, and ecosystems that are already under pressure. More attention means more risk and disruption. Its future is unlikely to be one dramatic opening but a series of smaller incursions, each adding to the next, as the ice recedes and the sea opens up. Read the full article below. Capital at risk.

A substantial part of modern lending now sits in a black box. There’s been a lot of talk about private credit of late. The booming asset class diversifies the lending market and reduces reliance on banks. It can also give long-term investors access to income streams they might not find elsewhere. But its first real test may still be ahead. A long period of cheap money helped private credit expand. It’s now woven into modern finance. Now, higher rates, slower growth, AI uncertainty, and rising defaults are starting to test the system. Read the latest Weekend Read from Alex Pugh below. Capital at risk.

The office promises of AI are dazzling. Less admin, fewer meetings, cleaner drafts, faster summaries. The end of the blank page. But we also face a tsunami of workslop: AI-generated work that appears useful but lacks substance, contains inaccurecies, or needs someone else to correct or redo it entirely. In one survey, 40% of 1,150 US employees said they had received workslop in the past month. In the latest Weekend Read, Alex Pugh outlines how plenty of office faff deserves to die. But some difficulty is how judgement forms. The trick, as AI settles into office work, will be teasing apart useless friction from useful struggle. Read the full article below. Capital at risk.

Housing is in the spotlight in the latest Weekend Read from Alex Pugh. Alex argues that Britain’s housing dysfunction has endured because it serves one powerful group very well: homeowners. This cohort are generally more likely to vote. Therefore, the people who benefit from cheaper homes may be less politically powerful than the people who already own them. Not only is this unjust, it’s bad for the economy. High housing costs leave households with less money to spend, save or invest. The result is an economy that looks rich on paper, but hollow and wonky IRL. Read the full article below. Capital at risk.
