Around 5–7 million species of land (terrestrial) animals, give or take a few million—mostly undiscovered insects and other creepy-crawlies.1 That’s the scientific estimate for all non-marine animal species on Earth right now (not counting the ~2 million or so marine ones). Here’s the quick breakdown so you can start sketching those ark blueprints: •Total species on Earth (all life): Scientists’ best current guess is roughly 8.7 million eukaryotic species (±1–2 million), with about 80% living on land and only ~15% in the oceans.3 •Animal species specifically: ~7.8 million total. The overwhelming majority are terrestrial—estimates for land animals alone hover around 5.6 million (again, mostly insects, arachnids, etc.).1 •Described (known) animal species: Only about 1.5–2.1 million so far, and ~1 million of those are insects that already live on land.0 If “land animals” means the big, stall-worthy ones (like Noah probably had in mind): •Mammals: ~6,500–7,000 species •Birds: ~11,000 species •Reptiles: ~11,000–12,000 species •Amphibians (mostly land-dwelling as adults): ~8,000 species That’s roughly 35,000–40,000 described terrestrial vertebrate species. Still a lot of stalls, especially if you’re taking two of each (or seven of the clean ones). For the ark-planning part: •If you’re going full Noah and including every kind of land animal (insects included), you’re going to need an ark roughly the size of… well, the planet. Good luck with the termites. •If you’re only doing vertebrates (the classic “two of every sort” interpretation), you could maybe squeeze it into something the size of a really big cargo ship—creationist estimates for “kinds” (broader than species) sometimes run as low as a few thousand pairs, but that’s not the scientific species count. •Fish and sea creatures? Skip ’em—they get to ride out the flood on their own. Bottom line: Your ark is either going to be a floating insect hotel the size of Texas, or you’re gonna have to get very selective about what counts as a “land animal.” Either way, I recommend starting with the elephants—they take up a lot of room.
